Vegas PBS Prepares for Emergencies
After 9/11, Sin City elders figured their tourist and convention Mecca might someday be a target. Today, Las Vegas public broadcaster KLVX-Vegas PBS has piles of data files on buildings, people and training methods and can send specialized, secured information to laptops in 60 emergency vehicles. In case of emergency, its DTV signal can stay robust even when cell phone networks and the Internet clog.

 

State of Missouri Plans Next-Gen EAS
SpectraRep won a contract from the state of Missouri to deploy a statewide emergency alert system, an upgrade to that state's EAS and Alert Missouri programs.

 

EAS Advances
PBS has completed a major phase in the new digital EAS (D-EAS) system for Presidential alerts. Most of the country's 174 PBS stations are equipped to receive such messages over PBS satellites, with state emergency operations centers expected to be online in June.

 

New Digital EAS System Demonstrated
A new Digital Emergency Alert System, which uses digital broadcast signals to send emergency messages to PCs and mobile devices, was demonstrated in the Washington, D.C. area this week. The system, which was developed by the Association of Public Television Stations in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency is still in the plot stage, but could be up and running by the end of 2007

 

APTS Names SpectraRep Integrator for Digital EAS
SpectraRep, a subsidiary of BIA Financial Network, said it's been chosen by the Association of Public Television Stations as a systems designer and integrator and project manager for the national Digital Emergency Alert System program, a wireless data delivery system for EAS.

Two firms that provide services for broadcasting emergency alerts-SpectraRep and SquareLoop recently released a white paper, "Crisis Communications: A Holistic Approach for Higher Education." The paper explains how a holistic approach to campus emergency communications involves entire, integrated systems using diverse communications channels rather than isolated parts to reach as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

Together, the capabilities being shown durin g the CAP interoperability demonstration can form the technology core of a standards-based, all-media, all-hazards public warning strategy.
