Philadelphia Zoo Launches SpectraRep’s ActiveCrawl RSS® For Internal Use Campus-Wide Emergency Alerting to the Desktop

America’s First Zoo Deploying Text Crawls through Amerilert,
As Part of Multimodal Notification Approach to Mass Staffing Alerts

CHANTILLY, VA, March 23, 2010SpectraRep®, LLC a provider of advanced solutions for emergency notification, announced today that the Philadelphia Zoo has selected its ActiveCrawl RSS® desktop solution to alert its staff and administration of zoo and city-wide emergencies. Integrated through Amerilert, the leading unified notification system for corporations and non-profits, ActiveCrawl RSS will provide an additional channel for zoo officials to instantly send emergency alerts when time is critical.

When activated, alerts will appear as text crawls over whatever happens to be on an employee’s computer at the time. This immediate communication will help mobilize staff when minutes are critical. Having just turned 150-years-old, the Philadelphia Zoo is America’s first zoo and has an annual attendance of approximately 1.2 million visitors.

“As a large, 42-acre public facility with 1,300 rare and endangered animals we are striving to ensure that our emergency procedures are in place quickly during times of crisis of any size,” said Kevin Hanna, director of public safety at the Philadelphia Zoo. “What appealed to us was that ActiveCrawl RSS provides an immediate push to the computer without requiring our employees to look at their emails or check the Internet. It’s that alert functionality we found so valuable.”

ActiveCrawl RSS is part of SpectraRep’s ActiveAccess™ suite of solutions for emergency alerting to the computer desktop. As a Certified Endpoint Provider of Amerilert, ActiveCrawl RSS is easily accessed through the Amerilert administrative interface to initiate and send alerts to the desktop. Text crawls are delivered through PCs and Macs within seconds of being issued. The crawls can contain audio and graphics and the color and height of the crawl are customizable.

“Public facilities, particularly as large and open as a zoo, present sensitive staff communication issues during emergencies, often requiring multimodal methods to reach everyone quick and efficiently,” said Thomas Buono, CEO of SpectraRep. “Desktop applications such as the ActiveCrawl RSS can place critical information in front of the right people; and work in concert with other communication channels like SMS, voice, and digital signage since they bypass busy network lines during times of crisis.”
