This page explains why and how to apply for the CPB-administered Next Generation Warning System Grant Program (“NGWSGP”) Grant and explains how you can reference and price SpectraRep’s public alerting service. SpectraRep successfully provides emergency alerting datacasting services in over 100 public television stations. With our nationwide public alerting system rolling out, your station can be part of that – funded by the grant program.
Opportunity for Your Station
FEMA has issued the CPB-administered Next Generation Warning System Grant Program (“NGWSGP”). This program will support the development of a nationwide datacasting public alert and warning system that provides timely and effective warnings using the FEMA Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) combined with the latest broadcast technology standards.
In this program, CPB will award subgrants to fund equipment purchases, installation, and training. As requested in the grant, this alerting equipment will allow your station to assist people with access and functional needs, people with limited English proficiency, and people in underserved geographic locations, including tribal and remote rural areas.
Submit a grant application to fund the purchase of datacasting equipment that will improve station resilience and security, while improving the transmission of emergency alerts and warnings to your community.
Applying for a Grant – 3 Steps
The grant application is straightforward requiring the preparation of three documents (can also be found in the right sidebar) and providing supporting materials:

Submitting the Grant Application
Once prepared, applications must be submitted through CPB’s Grants Management System (GMS) which will serve as the hub for information related to NGWSGP applications, awards, and the administration of subgrants. To submit applications, stations must first request access to the GMS system at ngws@cpb.org. (More instructions here.)
Further Grant Details
- Funding: Individual subgrants totaling approximately $34 million in federal funding.
- Application DEADLINE: Request for Applications window will close at 5:00 PM EST on November 8, 2023.
- This is a rolling grant program, and CPB expects it to be over-subscribed. While it is not a first-come-first-served program, CPB encourages stations to apply early.
